What is an RSS feed?

An RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed is a supply of new content from a web site delivered to the reader, typically in the form of article headlines or summaries. These web site headlines inform you of fresh material, breaking news, new products, or just about anything current that the publisher thinks you would be interested in from their site. If you want to find out more about a particular headline all you have to do is click on it and you are automatically taken to the full article. Text, images, audio (including podcasts) and video can be incorporated into RSS feeds.

What are the benefits of RSS?

RSS feeds are a great way to keep up to date with all of your interests on the web in one place. You can subscribe to feeds from all of your favorite sites and be the first to receive their news the moment they update it! Before i used RSS feeds i had to visit each site that i was interested in and browse through it looking for any updates or new content. Now, i can view all of my feeds in one central place and save hours of surfing time!

You receive and view your RSS feeds on something called a Newsreader or Aggregator. They essentially retrieve the updated news from the web sites or blogs that you specify, and post them all in the same place. So the news reader is very much like a personalized bulletin board that brings you constantly updating information that is important to you.

How do i start using RSS?

First of all you will need a Newsreader or Aggregator. There are many different types available (some free and some not). There are those which you can download onto your PC (which will restrict you to using it only on that PC), and those which are accessed using a browser (which means you can use it not only on your PC but the one in the library, the internet cafe, your friends PC or wherever you are accessing the net).

Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to choose one that will work with your computer.

WINDOWS :  Newz Crawler (14 day trial period, $24.95 to buy)

FeedDemon (30 day free trial, $29.95 to buy)

MAC OS X :  Newsfire

                    NetNewsWire

WEB :          Bloglines (Free and easy sign-up)

My Yahoo! (Free and easy to follow)

                    NewsGator (Free)

Google Reader (Free and easy to follow)

Once you have chosen a news reader, you should go ahead and sign up for an account (a simple process with yahoo or google) or download it. Then all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive. This is the fun part because you can personalize your reader to show all the new information from your favorite sites. Generally, readers will ask you to select a few core feeds which will include news, weather, sports, and other general headlines. Then you can begin taking feeds from other sites and blogs that interest you.

How do i subscribe to a feed?

Click on this RSS feed icon  and you will be directed to the site feed. The Nature by Dezign Blog feed, like any other feed will give you options on which reader you would like to save the RSS feed to. The options box will look something like this :

Simply click on the reader that you chose to sign up with (either the reader icon or in the drop-down box) and you will be directed to that reader which will automatically load the feed once you sign in. Or you can right click on the icon and click on 'copy shortcut' and simply paste this into the 'add feed URL option' in your reader. Another option is to copy the feed URL straight from the browser window and again paste it in to the 'add feed option' in your reader. Also individual readers will have their own ways in which you can search for and add your different feeds.

To subscribe to the Nature by Dezign Blog where you will be updated with new product items, coupon codes, newsletters, offers, promotions, and our comings and goings you can use the RSS feed icon above or the one located on our home page.

Can i collect Audio & Video feeds?

If you want to collect and store your audio and video feeds in one place then all you need is an RSS aggregator which will perform this function for you. This is a great tool for centralizing your podcasts, video clips, movie trailers, TV shows, and movies! Download the best RSS aggregator. Get I’M for FREE This RSS aggregator broadcasts high definition video over a broadband connection. You can browse for audio and video feeds, store them, and play them all in one place, as well as receive updates of new feeds!
